This guide covers what fields are, where to configure them, and how to add, edit, and organize them within a section.
What are Fields?
A field is the individual question or prompt in a SiteCapture project. Each distinct project photo will need an associated field that it can be attached to.
Where do I Configure Fields?
Fields can be configured in the Template Editor, see: How to Create and Manage Templates for more information.
Adding & Editing Fields
Fields must be contained within a section; see: Adding and Editing Sections for more information.

This will add the field at the bottom of the section. If you wish to add a field under another field, click the three-dot icon next to the field you want to add the new field under and select New field...

FAQ
What's the difference between Required and Admin Only?
Required means the field must be filled out before a non-admin user can mark the project Complete. Admin Only means non-admin users can't change the field at all while filling out the project. A field can use both settings, one, or neither.
Can I set a default value for a Multiple Selection field?
No. Default values are supported for individual Selection and Button Selection fields, but not for Multiple Selection or Multiple Button Selection fields.
Why don't I see the option to add an example photo when I first create a field?
Example photos can only be added after a field has been saved. Save the field with Photos/Videos enabled, then re-edit it to upload an example photo.
Why won't my example photo upload?
Example photos must be JPG files. HEIC, the default format on iPhone, isn't supported, so you may need to convert the photo before uploading it.
Can I copy a field into a different section?
Yes. Use the three-dot menu on the field you want to copy from, choose "Copy of different field...", then select the field in the field selector. This works across sections.
Best Practices
- Add instructions and an example photo to any field that needs a specific photo. This is one of the most effective ways to keep field submissions consistent, particularly for fields tied to compliance checks, financier or lender requirements, or automated photo review. Clear instructions plus a real example photo reduce ambiguity about what the field is asking for.
- Leave Field Key blank unless you're integrating with another system. An auto-generated key works just as well as a custom one unless a specific integration requires a particular value.
- Match Photo Resolution to your team's needs. Higher resolution settings preserve more image detail but increase file size and sync time, so choose the lowest resolution that still meets your reporting or compliance requirements.
