Ensuring High-Quality Photos in SiteCapture

To consistently capture clear, high-quality photos in SiteCapture, it’s important to follow best practices across how photos are taken, configured and viewed.

Why Best Practices Matter

Photo quality in SiteCapture is influenced by several factors:

  • How photos are captured
  • How settings are configured
  • How photos are viewed or exported

Following best practices across each of these areas is essential to ensure consistently clear, high-quality photos.

1. Capture Photos Within the SiteCapture Mobile App

Ensure users are taking photos directly in the SiteCapture mobile app.

Why this matters:

  • External photos may be compressed or resized before upload
  • This can result in lower or inconsistent quality

2. Ensure Proper Syncing

Photos must be fully synced to display correctly across devices.

Best practices:

Ensure field users:

  • Fully sync their work
  • Have a stable connection when syncing
Quick tip: Have users open the app at the start and end of each day (with a good connection) and leave it open until their work is fully loaded and synced.

For more information on syncing, see this article: Syncing, Sync Status Screen, and Sync Settings

3. Configure Photo Resolution in Templates

Photo resolution determines the level of detail captured in each image.

  • Use High or Highest resolution for fields that require detail
  • Set the resolution in your templates and publish before photos are taken (work created from older version of your template with low resolution will not update)

How to update:

  • Edit the field in the Template Editor
  • Select the desired Photo Resolution setting

See this article for instructions on how to configure resolution settings in your templates: Changing a Field’s Resolution Setting

4. Review Photo Compression Settings

Compression reduces file size to improve sync performance, but also impacts image clarity.

  • We recommend the High - 80 setting for the best performance without noticeable reduction in photo quality
  • Higher settings increase file size and sync time

How to update:

  • Go to Admin → Settings → Mobile Photos
  • Adjust Compression Photo Quality

See this article for more information on compression settings: Compression Settings

5. View Photos at Full Resolution

Photos may appear blurry if you are viewing a thumbnail preview.

To view full-quality images:

  • Open the photo in the Photo Manager
  • Select the “Open image in a new tab” icon, or select "Actual Size" on the photo size selector at the top left of the Photo Viewer.

For more details on how to use the Photo Manager, please see this article: Photo Manager: Edit, View High Resolution, Reorder, Flag, Download, & Delete Photos

6. Downloading Photos (ZIP Files)

When exporting photos:

  • Ensure high-resolution photos are selected when downloading
  • Otherwise, lower-quality versions may be exported

7. Report Configuration

Photo quality in reports depends on how reports are configured.

  • Ensure reports are set to:
    • Display high-resolution images, or
    • Link to high-resolution versions
